Downloading one YouTube video is easy. Downloading a playlist — forty lectures, a whole album, a tutorial series — is where most tools and most guides fall apart. This guide covers the entire process the way it actually works in 2026: what counts as a playlist link, how to fetch the full list of videos, which format and quality to choose, and what to do when something refuses to download.
Step 1: Get the right link
Everything starts with the URL. A playlist link always contains list= followed by an ID:
youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxxxx– the playlist page itself. This is the ideal link to copy.youtube.com/watch?v=abc&list=PLxxxx– a video playing inside a playlist. Also valid: thelist=part is what matters.list=RDxxxx– an auto-generated radio "Mix". These are endless, personal and generated on the fly, so they do not behave like a real playlist. Rebuild the songs into a normal playlist first.
On a phone, open the playlist in the YouTube app and tap Share → Copy link. On a computer, copy the address bar. If the playlist is yours and set to private, switch it to unlisted first — no tool on the internet can read a private playlist, which is exactly how it should be.
Step 2: Fetch the full list of videos
Paste the link into the box on our YouTube playlist downloader and press Get Playlist Videos. The tool reads the playlist the same way YouTube pages through it, so a 300-video playlist lists completely — not just the first screenful. You get every video with its thumbnail and title, in the creator’s order.
This list step matters more than it looks. It lets you choose: skip the intro video you have seen five times, grab only episodes 12–20, or confirm the playlist is the right one before committing gigabytes of storage.
Step 3: Choose MP4 or MP3 — and the right quality
Each video has a download button that opens the format screen. Two decisions:
- MP4 (video) – for tutorials, courses with slides, music videos. 720p is the sweet spot for phone screens; 1080p for TVs and monitors. Expect roughly 700 MB per hour at 720p and about double at 1080p.
- MP3 (audio) – for music, podcasts and lectures you only listen to. Ten times smaller than video. If you only ever want audio, the playlist to MP3 converter is built for exactly that; our bitrate guide explains when 320 kbps is worth it.
On a phone: Android and iPhone specifics
Android: everything runs in Chrome or any browser — no APK needed. Files land in your Downloads folder and show up in the gallery automatically. Full walkthrough: playlist downloader for Android.
iPhone/iPad: Safari has had a download manager since iOS 13. Files go to the Files app, and MP4s can be moved into Photos. Details and iCloud tips: playlist downloader for iPhone.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Pasting a channel link. A channel is not a playlist. Open the channel’s Playlists tab and copy a specific playlist.
- Expecting one giant ZIP. Browser tools save file by file, which is more reliable and lets you resume where you left off. Bulk-ZIP is desktop-software territory.
- Downloading 1080p on mobile data. A 30-video playlist at 1080p can eat 30+ GB. Use Wi-Fi or pick 720p/audio.
- Ignoring storage. Check free space before starting a long course download; see the sizes table above.

Is it legal?
Short version: downloading content you own, content with the author’s permission, or content under a permissive licence (Creative Commons, public domain) for personal offline use is generally fine. Downloading copyrighted material without permission, or republishing anything you downloaded, is not — and YouTube’s own terms restrict downloads outside its apps. The long version lives on our copyright information page.
